Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I teach the intersection of art and life, seeking the integration of technical inquiry and social participation in order to develop artists with confident craftsmanship and a strong sense of purpose. I want my students to know that their work matters. Courageous artists spearhead important cultural conversations, locally and globally. As much as possible I want to link students to the trends in art, aesthetics, current events, philosophy, health, love, politics, or any other social sphere that fuels their creativity. I encourage research for each project and student presentations on artists so that students can identify other art practices that impact the world. I believe in making students aware of their options, fostering a period of experimentation, and then leading them to finish their best works completely. It is especially important to encourage upper-level students to cultivate an understanding of how they function as public cultural producers in society.
